Kelty Ridgeway: Why Poor Reviews? This is a Great Tent!

I have seen several poor reviews for the Kelty Ridgeway and quite frankly don't understand the comments.

I have had my Kelty Ridgeway for 4 years and use it extensively.

I have been caught in extreme weather in the Smoky Mtns and the tent never failed me.

Maybe my model was a newer version because some of the items described in other reviews did not exist on my tent, such as the screened in room had a full floor, and all of the floors were heavy duty.

There is great space and plenty of zip open windows for ventilation when you want it. The ease of set up is unmatched in any tent I have ever owned.

The only repair I have had to do was a fiberglass pole replacement because an intoxicated camper fell on the pole (I loaned the tent to some friends).

I am using the tent again in the Smokies next week for Spring Break....It is supposed to snow a little and I am looking forward to it.

So, being the odd one out there, I love my Kelty Ridgeway and am glad I got it for a great price.

And I take my camping, backpacking and hiking seriously.

it seems that alot of the reviews are based on the smaller 3 man tent.... if you have one of the bigger 8 man tent you should be fine....

Love My Kelty Ridgeway 8 Person Tent

by Angel
(Stacy, MN)

We bought our 8 person Rideway tent from Cosco about 6 years ago and we love it!

I am surprised by the poor rating it has received here.

It's an awesome tent - very spacious. And we are not "serious" campers probably, but we have really enjoyed our tent and have not found zippers to jam easily or fabric to tear.

We have entry doors on every side with lots of windows and a cover that allows you to see out even if it's raining.

We love the screened room area and keep our food inside over night.

Editor's Note

Hi Angel,

I'm glad you've had such a great experience with your Kelty Ridgeway tent. Apparently, within recent years, manufacturing of the Kelty Ridgeway tent has been outsourced and is no longer technically a 'Kelty' product. It's a Kelty in name only.

As a result, the tent's quality has drastically decreased. If your Kelty Ridgeway 8 tent has lasted you 6 solid years, I would venture to guess that you purchased it before the manufacturing switch and it's a true Kelty tent.

That's the best our editors could come up with here.

We bought our tent at Costco 12 years ago. It has kept us and our two dogs completely comfortable in high wind and rain. It takes us about 15 minutes to set it up. My husband is 6'5", so we are looking for one that is a bit taller at center now, and it's hard to find one that we like as well. The rainfly is just now getting a pinhole or two, which we are going to patch. Keeping this tent for our kids and grandkids to use. Only problem is keeping warm when the temp drops at night. great ventilation in hot weather.

I bought a 9person Ridgeway Kelty tent from Costco back in 2005ish. We love our tent. We use it once a year, and it's still going strong. This past weekend we put two little tears in it. :-(, but I just patched it w/duct tape. Overall, I would buy this again, except our family has grown. I love the enclosed screen room. Yes, the zippers sometimes get stuck, but nothing unusual about a zipper.

Ridgeway by Kelty Alpine Lake

by Linda
(Overton, Nevada)

Love this tent! We are serious campers and go several times a year for several weeks at a time...with people who have very expensive tents.

We have been through some incredible wind and rain storms.

Each year at least one expensive tent is destroyed and Kelty Ridgeway is still standing. Everyone wants to know where they can get one like ours.

The only problem is we can't find a tent like it. It is so easy to set up...4 poles...all the same size and it is a 10 man tent!

I can set it up all by myself while my husband takes care of other things.

We set up our queen size mattress in the small room (there is still enough room for our bags) and then the kids (if they are there) or the table and chairs and luggage and camping gear goes in the bigger room.

The boy scouts have used it and this tent even survived a week of 7 boys!

We bought this tent at Costco and we have had it for 5 years.

I love it!

Ridgeway by Kelty - I Hate This Tent

by Naomi
(Las Vegas, NV USA)

The zippers jam easily.

Two of the poles bent on the first night out.

The floor is not well made.

I do like the size, but it's a pain to set up with only 2 people.

Kelty Ridgeway Cabin Tent: 8 Person Tent Review

by Cara
(Lempster, NH)

DO NOT BUY THE KELTY RIDGEWAY CABIN TENT!!!

First, the instruction manual was complicated and it took my husband about 45 minutes to put it up the first time.

We noticed not only was the floor material cheap (like a basic tarp), but it already had a puncture in it.

Second, within 15 minutes of it being up, a pole bent in half and snapped! Yes, it was a windy day, but come on!

Third, half an hour later, one of the main support strings snapped in half!

Thankfully, we were able to get a full refund, but a waste of time!

Oh, and it is heavy (almost 30 pounds!).

I would never, ever recommend the Kelty Ridgeway Cabin Tent to anyone. EVER.

Comment from Brian

My kids (8, 10, 12, and 14) set the tent up themselves in less than 15 minutes all the time.

It has survived 30 or so nights so far with no rips or tears through some ugly wind and rain.

Yes it is heavy but it's an 8 person tent.

Recently we did break one of the main poles (kids... being kids) and kealty replaced it for 10 bucks including shipping.

Ridgeway by Kelty Highlander Style: You Get What You Pay For

by Cathie Leslie
(Lehigh Acres, Florida)

One of my favorite things about the Ridgeway by Kelty Highlander style is it's easy setup.

It withstood heavy Florida downpoors of rain with minimal water intrusion (that was VERY nice).

But it needs more storage compartments. An electric opening would've been nice instead of having to keep the wires at the zipper openings.

We found the fiberglass rods to be very weak. After only one setup we had to replace two major poles.

Seams on the canopy ripped at tie down.

No access to replacement parts on-line, which is an inconvenience in of itself.

We had our Eddie Bauer tent for 6 years and had NO problems at all other than our family outgrew it, and the Highlander seemed to be alot of tent for the money, but you get what you pay for.

This is not a bad tent, but it is not the best.

I would go back to Eddie Bauer products!!

Kelty Ridgeway 3 Person Tent Has Treated Me Right!

by Spud
(Olympia, WA)

I've had this strapped on the back of my motorcycle for 3 summer trips, carried it in my sailboat for island camping in Puget Sound, and used it for car camping more often than I can remember.

It's always given me great service with no problems.

Maybe I just got lucky with this one, but for me, it's been great.
