North Face Rock 22 Tent Reviews
2 Person Backpacking Tent

The North Face Rock 22 tent is one of the best 3 season, 2 person tents.

However, while Rock 22 BX reviews are generally positive, this lightweight camping gear has drawbacks consumers must be made aware of.

While the Rock 22BX is marketed as a lightweight, backpacking tent, it is more of a 2 person dome camping tent. Compared to other similarly priced tents, the Rock 22 dome by North Face is heavy.

That said, it does provide plenty of space--enough room for two grown men to have plenty of area to stretch out.

With the North Face, you know you are purchasing a quality dome camping tent. The Rock 22 BX is sturdy, can withstand heavy winds, will keep you dry (although camping tent reviews find hiking gear in the vestibule gets wet), and is a cheap tent.

For under $200, few shelters are as reliable, lightweight, and spacious (but they do exist--particularly Eureka tents and the North Face Dyad 22 tent).

The Rock 22 Tent Pitched & Specs

Below are many thoughtful and beneficial features of the North Face Rock 22 3 season tent:

  • Ultralight aluminum tent poles

  • 2 gear vestibules

  • 2 doors

  • Overhead pockets for convenient storage of small camping items

  • Dome tent design allows for high maximum height

  • Lifetime warranty

Ultralight backpackers would look at these features and scoff. While many of the Rock 22 features are nice bells and whistles, they add extra weight and cause the tent to weigh over 5 pounds.

Still, 5 pounds won't break your back and at under $200, this cheap, lightweight camping tent won't break your bank either.

The North Face Rock 22 Footprint

The Rock 22 Footprint will help extend the lifetime of your tent.

Almost all camping tents should be used with the footprint--after all, they are significant investments. However, the North Face Rock 22 tent comes with a lifetime warranty, so why purchase The North Face Rock 22 Footprint?

In this case, skip on the footprint.

The North Face Rock 22 Backpacking Tent: Advantage

The fact is, this is a luxury backpacking shelter.

Campers carry an extra 2-3.5 pounds for the luxury of two doors, plenty of headroom, and space to stretch out. If you desire this type of luxury while camping, the North Face Rock 22 price is affordable and makes this tent a steal.

Another Shot of the Rock 22 Tent

However, if you are a lightweight backpacker, skip on the Rock 22 and purchase the North Face Dyad 22 instead.

There are fewer bells and whistles, but it has the advantages of a true lightweight shelter. The tent poles are what makes the Rock 22 tent so light, but the same aluminum tent poles are used in the Dyad 22.

If you are looking for a comfortable car camping tent that is reasonably priced or want extra luxury in the backcountry, the advantages of the Rock 22 BX by North Face are perfect for you.

The North Face Rock 22 BX: Disadvantages

First is the weight: while light, it's not ultralight. With the rainfly and footprint, this 3 season, 2 person backpacking tent weighs in at nearly 7 pounds. No way around it: that's heavy.

Next is the ventilation: when the rainfly is off, two doors provide excellent cross ventilation. But when the rainfly is on, there is no airflow. Condensation will form on the inside of the Rock 22 tent walls.

Finally, the gear vestibule is not as reliable as other North Face tents. Many North Face Rock 22 reviews complain of gear getting wet while stored in the vestibule. This has the potential to ruin a trip.

The North Face Rock 22 BX Tent: Consumer Reviews

Consumers like:
  • Easy set up
  • Very reasonable price
  • Spacious
  • Lightweight
Consumers don't like:
  • Condensation on inside of tent
  • Not light enough for many backpackers
  • Cheap stakes
  • Gear gets wet in vestibule

North Face Rock 22 Tents are a very cheap tent. At under $200, few camping tents are so well-priced and reliable.

That said, it's inappropriately marketed. The North Face Rock 22 Tent is a luxurious backpacking tent, but not very lightweight.

It is more than adequate for car camping and plenty of hikers will lug it around for many miles--at Camping Tent Reviews though, we wouldn't.
