Super lightweight, fantastically portable, and as tough as they come, the Zoid 1 is the perfect shelter for the mountaineer who likes to have a solo shelter that he or she can fit comfortably in, at the same time keeping their gear dry and safe in the spacious vestibule (7.2 square feet) area.
Unfortunately, the Zoid 1 is no longer made. But we decided to keep up this review for historical purposes. We highly recommend checking out our recommendations on the best backpacking tents & also reading other MSR tent reviews.
We at Camping Tent Reviews never take a product for granted. Even though it may be created by one of our favorite companies (like MSR), every tent gets the full inspection.
Here we have taken the Zoid 1 backpacking tent and really explored its ins and outs, positives and negatives, and pros and cons. It's up to you, however, to see which means more to you: the good or the bad.
If you decide that the benefits outweigh the drawbacks, then you'd do well to give the MSR Zoid 1 a closer look. As you'll see below, it's a truly fantastic shelter that will keep you warm, dry, safe, and happy.
As far as the Zoid 1's benefits are concerned, here are a few of the best:
It was quite difficult to come up with enough drawbacks to even have a disadvantages section to this review, but like everything else in the world, there are people who don't like this solo backpacking tent.
No, correction: there are people who aren't 100% satisfied with it.
Because, in truth, everyone likes it.
A couple of aspects that kept some online consumer reviewers from giving this solo tent the full four or five stars include:
Weighing in at a mere 3 pounds, 6 ounces when packed (it's less than three unpacked), this tent is incredibly lightweight and super portable.
What you get with the Zoid 1 tent is the pack size and weight of a bivy sack with the protection and space of a tent.
Most bivy sacks have insufficient vertical space, causing condensation and forcing you to bump into the walls and ceiling with the slightest movement. But the Zoid 1 is a palace in comparison. With a peak height of almost three feet, you'll have plenty of room to do what you need to do within your shelter.
As with most other MSR tents, the Zoid 1 is amazingly easy to erect..
In less than three minutes, you can go from packed away (in your backpack) to tucked away (in your sleeping bag).
One of the biggest drawbacks to choosing the Zoid 1 backpacking tent is the vestibule. Because this is a solo tent, the vestibule area isn't very large.
So, if you have a large pack in there, it makes it hard to get in and out of the Zoid 1 easily. You may have to push things around to squeeze out. But, this really isn't an uncommon problem with single person tents.
We at Camping Tent Reviews have found that various websites are offering various dimensions for the Zoid 1 solo tent.
Some sites say it has 20 square feet (it really has 16.3), weighs less than two pounds (not quite that light), or has a peak height of 24 inches (much more than that). A lot o this misinformation is causing people to buy what they didn't want or pass over a product they could really have used.

Summary:
The MSR Zoid 1 is one of the best single person tents on the market. With it, you'll enjoy the portability of a bivy sack with the durability and design of a tent.
There's no reason you shouldn't give this shelter a closer look if you are on the hunt for something similar. It's a truly great tent.
