This affordable family dome tent is perfectly suited to introduce your kids to camping.
While Kelty Yellowstone Tents are not castles in the woods like other family tent models are, they certainly do the trick and will keep your family happy for years to come.
When shopping for a family tent to introduce your children to the woods, many parents are quick to drive to Target or Walmart--however, Kelty Yellowstone 6 Tents are of stronger quality, more intelligent build, and will keep your family warm and dry while camping.
The effectiveness of other similarly priced, mass merchant family tents is questionable.
Kelty understands the essentials of dome family tents and implemented them in this shelter. Some of the thoughtful features include:
Kelty Yellowstone 6 Tent Specs
While nothing is stand-out exceptional with the Kelty Yellowstone Six Tent--for instance, it is a single room family camping tent as opposed to 3 rooms like other shelters--it is a quality shelter overall.
There's a reason why the Kelty Tent Company dominates entry-level camping gear and equipment: reasonable prices, effective and reliable gear, and no bells and whistles to raise prices.
Purchasing a tent footprint can greatly increase the lifespan of your tent. Considering that Kelty Yellowstone Tents are designed for families and kids, they will likely get beat up real fast.
Camping Tent Reviews highly recommends purchasing the Kelty Yellowstone 6 Footprint for this reason (it will only add 1 pound, 4 ounces to your tent weight).
The Yellowstone 6 in Green
The most significant advantage of this 3 season family tent is price..
6 man family tents can easily top $400-500, but the Yellowstone 6 is less than $200 at Backcountry.com.
Even though it doesn't have the bells and whistles of other, more expensive family camping tents, this dome shelter is designed as a reliable, entry-level tent.
Basically, you don't lose too much money if your children hate camping, but you won't be worried about leakage ruining a family vacation neither.
If your children hate camping, it won't be because the tent let your family down.
While Yellowstone Tents are designed for entry-level campers and those families that enjoy tent camping without the frills, there are some serious disadvantages about this tent that consumers must be aware of before purchasing.
First, there is no gear vestibule. Since these are tents for car camping, the lack of a vestibule is not a deal breaker. Your car can store all needed camping equipment. But the lack of a vestibule is something you should be aware of.
Next, there is only one door. Again, not a deal breaker. However, if you pack the Kelty Yellowstone six person 3 season family tent to its full capacity, two doors for entry and exit would be desirable.
Also, at 90 square feet there isn't all that much leg room to stretch out when 6 people fill the Yellowstone 6.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, is the fact that Yellowstone Tents have fiberglass tent poles.
Fiberglass is not as durable as aluminum tent poles. This increases the likelihood that your tent will not hold up in the long haul or a tent pole may break while camping.
You can always order more tent poles, but not from the woods.

This no-frills family tent for camping is ideal for car camping.
While most Kelty Yellowstone 6 reviews are positive, the tent certainly has a handful of drawbacks and is not ideal for every camper.
The bottom line is this: If you're on a budget and want to introduce camping to your children, the Kelty Yellowstone Six Tent is worthy of consideration.
