But is bigger necessarily better?

The Kelty Green River 6 Tent

Note: The Green River 6 is no longer made. A similar tent, the Kelty Pavilion, can be found at . This review will be kept up for historical purposes.

Most Kelty family tents are misleading: they're marketed as a 6 person tent but can only fit 4 people, or a 4 man shelter fits 3.

Not so with the Kelty Green River 6. This shelter includes many features making it perfect for base camp:

  • Humongous - 204 square feet is larger than many New York City studio apartments

  • Internal storage - Pockets provide easy organization and a ceiling loop provides attachment of a gear loft

  • Waterproof - A well-designed rainfly means the fly won't sag and water won't get inside

  • Large gear vestibule - Easy to shed wet layers and boots without tracking mud and dirt into the tent
But even with all these features and thoughtful considerations, is the Kelty Green 6 tent with screen room really worth it? Consumer reviews are mixed, with only 75% recommending it to a friend, according to REI's Review Snapshot.

The question is, will this camping tent meet your family's needs? The answer can be found by examining the Green River's advantages and disadvantages.

Kelty Green River Tents: Advantages

Green River 6 Tent Specs

The best aspect of this 6 person family camping shelter is size. Few family tents for camping exist that are over 200 square feet.

With a max height of 6.5 feet, only giants will feel cramped. While most shelters have gear vestibules, few have vestibules tall enough to stand in. Changing out of muddy hiking clothes is easy with the Green River 6 tent.

The gear vestibule is so large it can double as a screen room.

Finally, nothing ruins a camping trip like a leaky tent. Thankfully, the Green River is fully waterproof.

Kelty Green River 6 Person Tents: Disadvantages

Green River Tent reviews are generally positive. However, they have numerous drawbacks that for some reason are not mentioned in many consumer reviews.

First, fiberglass poles are not as stable as aluminum tent poles. Unfortunately, this family camping tent is equipped with fiberglass tent poles.

Next is the fact that the Kelty Green River 6 tent has one door. When camping with your family, people will constantly be moving in and out of the tent. One door doesn't cut it.

Perhaps most important is that Green River Tents lack adequate ventilation. Excellent ventilation is a requirement in family camping tents, but the Green River 6 has terrible airflow.

When the screen room is opened, ventilation is better. However, you won't be sleeping with the screen room open, so in the end it still lacks adequate airflow.

Finally, after a long car ride, the last thing you want to do is spend an hour pitching the tent. Sadly, this 3 poled tent is cumbersome to pitch.

Kelty Green River 6 Tent: Consumer Reviews

Consumers like:
  • Waterproof
  • Spacious
  • Well-designed rainfly
  • Comfortable
Consumers don't like:
  • Heavy
  • Difficult to pitch

Kelty Green River Tents are certainly the most unique looking family camping shelters--and with 204 square feet, you're bound to have plenty of leg room.

Consumers are generally happy with their purchase. The Green River 6 is gigantic, waterproof, and reliable. While drawbacks exist, most owners don't seem to mind them.

Even though at Camping Tent Reviews, we believe the tent has too many drawbacks to justify the pricetag, too many for it to receive less than a 4 star rating.
