The Black Diamond Firstlight Tent

Some of the Firstlight's best features include:

Naturally, there are some drawbacks to choosing this tent above all others.

However, in the grand scheme of things, we here at Camping Tent Reviews are so used to seeing these very same disadvantages in so many other brands and models, that they hardly seem like disadvantages at all.

After all, if a problem is industry-wide, why should it stop you from looking at a specific model?

Some of these general drawbacks include:

  • Only Water-Resistant Not 100% waterproof, but really, what is?
  • No Factory Seam Seal - It's a DIY project for this tent and many, many others.

If you step away from the tree and look at the entire forest, you'll see that these flaws exist everywhere in the tent industry.

Whether or not they're present enough in this two man backpacking tent to keep you from owning one is up to you.

Ultimately you have to go with a shelter you feel comfortable sleeping in and purchasing with your hard-earned money.

Black Diamond Firstlight Tent Review: Advantages

black diamond first light tent

At a feather weight of 2 lbs 9 oz, the Black Diamond Firstlight Tent is one of the most portable two-person shelters on the market.

You'll hardly even feel it in your pack as you climb the mountain, navigate the forest, hike the trail, or tromp through the desert.

Although 27.3 square feet might not seem all that spacious to you, bear in mind that the walls of the Firstlight are incredibly steep.

This means that you don't lose inches (or feet) to tight angles.

You can take up every little bit of space you need. It's still pretty tight to fit two people comfortably, but if you're on your own, you'll feel like your camping in a palace.

This 2 man backpacking tent is also, by all accounts, an absolute snap to assemble.

If you are trying to outrace an impending storm, you won't have a problem getting this shelter up before you're hit.

Black Diamond Firstlight Tent Review: Disadvantages

black diamond first light tent

Like so many other tents on the market, the Firstlight doesn't come factory seam sealed.

They include a sealing kit in the box, but for a $300 tent, it really should be sealed before you buy it.

If you don't know what you're doing, you can find a specialist who'll seal your tent's seams for a fairly decent price.

Another drawback to this 2 person ultralight backpacking tent is that it isn't exactly waterproof.

It's made from Black Diamond's Epic fabric, which is superbly breathable, packable, lightweight stuff.

And, in all honesty, it will keep anything but a torrential downpour (with the pressure of a giant fire hose) out of the interior, but for legal reasons it has to be labeled water-resistant instead of waterproof.

Finally, the Black Diamond Firstlight does not have a vestibule for your backpacking gear.

Although there's a rainfly for gear, considering the tent lacks adequate waterproofness, the rainfly doesn't cut it.

You cannot comfortably fit two people and backpacking gear into this tent. No way.

Black Diamond Firstight Tent: Consumer Reviews

Consumers like:

  • Super lightweight
  • Easy assembly
  • Water-resistant
Consumers don't like:

  • Self seam sealing
  • Not 100% waterproof

$300 isn't exactly the lowest price for a two-person tent--especially one that isn't seem sealed. To be honest, we would say it's worth every penny for the Firstlight Tent.

After all, it's super lightweight, very comfortable, and easy to assemble.

BUT... while most of the disadvantages of the Firstlight are industry-wide and not specific to this model, the fact remains that this is a lightweight backpacking tent for 2 people--but without a gear vestibule.

It's just not large enough.

Instead, be sure to check out the Nemo Morpho AR. It might suit your needs better.
